Tornado

A message will come through the black walkie that there is a tornado.

  1. Use the roster and then count the number of children in the room to make sure all are accounted for. 

  2. Move all children to an inside wall without windows.

  3. Instruct children to place their heads between their legs and their arms over their heads.

  4. Teachers are to count to make sure all children are accounted for.

  5. Keep children calm and orderly until you are notified that things are safe. 

Parents MUST present their security pick up tag to take a child in an emergency.

Lock Down/ Shelter in Place

A message will come through the black walkie that there is an intruder and you need to lock down. Then proceed in this order:

  1. First, Shut Doors: 

    • Nursery: Run and close the kids pod door (the one by the nursing mothers room), it is locked. 

    • Toddler: Close your classroom door and cover the window with the black paper that is on the door. The doors will lock when shut.

    • Preschool: Close the door that leads into the hallway for PreK, the doors will lock when shut.

    • Elementary: Close your classroom door and cover the window with the black paper that is on the door. The doors will lock when shut.

  2. Move the kids to an area of the room that cannot be seen from the door window. 

  3. Use the roster and then count the number of children in the room to make sure all are accounted for. 

  4. Keep the kids low and quiet until a message comes through the black walkie talkies that it is all clear. 

Parents MUST present their security pick up tag to take a child in an emergency.

Fire or Evacuation

A message will come through the black walkie that there is a fire (the YWCA has a loud alarm) or a message to evacuate.

  1. Use the roster and then count the number of children in the room to make sure all are accounted for. 

  2. Line kids up

    • For Elementary: communicating an orderly line is necessary, one adult will lead, another will follow the line.

    • For Toddler and Preschool: Ask the children to line up and hold the security rope (found beneath the classroom tv). One teacher should be in front of the group and the other teacher in the back of the group.

    • For Nursery: Place all children in the Pack and Play and carry them out with one leader holding each side.

  3.  Lead all children to the nearest Exit and out to the main Parking Lot and wait for an all clear. 

Parents MUST present their security pick up tag to take a child in an emergency.

Missing Child

  1. FIRST, call the police officers on the black walkie talkie and let them know a child is missing. 

  2. Two volunteers must stay with the remaining kids. If any class has 3 or more volunteers, those volunteers should begin to search for the child. 

  3. Second, let Beth know (or Joy if Beth is out) to contact the parents. 

  4. If the child is taken from a classroom, immediately notify a lockdown on the radio. Provide a description of the attacker and the child, last location and direction of travel, classroom, and child’s name. 

  5. Then follow lockdown procedures.
